Oberlin Has a Great Start to the NCAC Championships

- Laura Vernon successfully defended her 2009 NCAC Championship in the pole vault, clearing 10-6 to highlight day one of the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Friday evening.

“We got off to good start today and put our ourselves in good position for tomorrow's finals,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. '

The Yeowomen, who rest in third place 31 points through five scored events, also got an all-conference performance from senior Cordelia Revells as she racked up six team points by placing third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:39.94.

Melissa DeLombaert was the only other Yeowomen to score on this night as she covered 31-05.75 in the triple jump to place eighth overall.

Oberlin claimed the top two spots in the prelims of the 400-meter dash with Marissa Clardy (59.87) checking in first and Amanda Miller following close behind in second at 1:00.19. Senior Clara Shaw won the 800-meter prelims with a mark of 2:20.56.

The Yeomen also had a strong start to the meet as they rest in fourth place with 21 points.

Leading the Oberlin effort was sophomore Ben Schild as he completed 5,000 meters in a school-record time of 15:12.90 to finish second overall.

Junior Josh Gallagher garnered six team points by earning all-conference honors with a third-place toss of 48-00.50 in the shot put.

First-year Alexander Guo covered 43-05.75 in the triple jump to place seventh overall, and Derek Lange ended eighth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:38.39 to round out the Yeomen point producers.

Senior Seth Wimberly won the prelims of both the 400 meters (50.36) and 200 meters (22.72).

Tomorrow's finals will get underway at 10:30 a.m.
