Final Results
Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's tennis squad squared off against NCAA Division II Ashland University tonight. In a lengthy match, the Eagles proved to be just a bit more than the Yeowomen could handle. AU, ranked sixth in the Midwest Region, earned a 7-2 win tonight.
The Oberlin doubles lineup contained a couple of new pairings tonight. In the No. 2 spot OC's
Julie Christensen and
Carolyn Ball would grind out an 8-6 win to keep Ashland from sweeping doubles play. In the top spot, the familiar duo of
Ariel Lewis and
Finley Gates were unable to get past Ashland's Torrie Goudy and Paige Cooper falling 8-4.
Trailing 2-1 heading into singles play, the Yeowomen were hoping for better results. Oberlin's lone winner was Lewis who found herself in a tight first set against Goudy. The Vacaville, California, native would prevail in the first set 7-6 (7-1) and then eased into a straight set win by taking the second set 6-2.
“Tonight we played okay. Ashland is a solid team from top to bottom and they were just better than we were in a couple of spots. I liked some of the things that we were able to accomplish though, our doubles pairings looked promising,” commented Head Coach
Constantine Ananiadis.
Hitting in the fifth spot, Ball and AU's Alex Ware were in a battle. Ball would take the first set 6-3 before slipping in the second 6-2. The Eagles had already earned the match win when this final match evened out at a set apiece. A super tiebreaker was used instead of a third set, and Ware would outlast the Yeowomen netter taking the tiebreak 10-4 and putting the first blemish on Ball's record.
Rebecca Brown would come up just a bit short in the No. 4 singles slot. Corinne Pasley would use identical 6-4 sets to earn Ashland the fifth team point of the match.
The Yeowomen will next be in action following a two week hiatus when they play host to John Carroll University in a match scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start on March 19. Depending on weather the two teams will either meet in John W. Heisman Field House or on the Don Hunsinger Outdoor Courts.
