Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team took to the road for the final time in 2009 and fell to the College of Wooster Fighting Scots 52-7 on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Sophomore tailback
Adam Lowther was one of the lone bright spots on the day as he finished with a career-high 83 yards on just 11 carries to go along with is first collegiate touchdown. Freshman quarterback
David Kalgren was 15-of-30 passing for a career-best 162 yards and he was also picked off one time. He also rushed the ball 13 times for 73 yards.
Ryan Harvey was the biggest beneficiary of Kalgren's efforts as he caught four balls for 76 yards.
A game that was tight early on snowballed on the Yeomen in a hurry as the Scots scored two touchdowns in the final 1:17 of the first half to take a 31-7 lead at the break.
Wooster (5-4, 4-2 NCAC) scored on the game's opening drive, but Oberlin (1-8, 1-5 NCAC) tied it at seven just before the end of the first quarter as Lowther ripped off a 40-yard touchdown run to cap a 7-play, 80-yard drive. On the scoring march, Lowther accounted for 58 yards as he also had an 18-yard scamper along the way.
Trailing 17-7 with 3:24 left in the first half, Oberlin was threatening to cut into the deficit as Kalgren and Harvey hooked up on a 54-yard pass play to put the Yeomen in the red zone. However, the drive stalled so
Zach Richard trekked out for a 32-yard field goal attempt, but it was blocked and returned 75 yards for a touchdown. On the ensuing Yeomen possession, Kalgren was picked off – leaving the Scots a short field to work with which quickly resulted in seven more points. So what could have been a 17-10 game, turned into a 31-7 game in a blink of an eye.
The Yeomen recorded a season-high 351 yards of offense on the day, but the Scots racked up 515 yards of their own in the win.
Eric Enrico led the defense with nine tackles, while
Tyler Lewis added seven in the contest.
Oberlin will wrap-up its 2009 campaign next Saturday when Hiram College comes to town for a 1 p.m. battle.
