Series Info …
Oberlin trails the all-time series against the Terriers 23-27 … Saturday marks the 51st meeting between the two schools, dating all the way back to 1895, in a game that Oberlin shutout Hiram 52-0 … Oberlin's last victory against the Terriers came two years ago in 2007 when the Yeomen flew by Hiram 49-14, led by an outstanding performance from former Yeomen great Chris Schubert… Last season, Oberlin jumped out to a quick lead on a one-yard plunge by running back
R.V. Carroll, which also made him the school's all-time leading scorer with 250 points … Hiram, however, added a quick score of their own to take a 7-6 lead into the second quarter … The Yeomen responded with another score of their own recapturing the lead, however, back-to-back scores by the Terriers pushed their lead to 21-13 … The Yeomen would cut into the lead with 27 seconds left in the first half on a one yard TD pass from
Greg Mangan to
Danny Enright, however, the Terriers were able to put together an astonishing 5-play, 61-yard drive in just 19 seconds to score another TD, just before halftime … The halftime score of 28-19 would also prove to be the final as both teams were held scoreless in the second half as the weather worsened … Wideout #C.J. Holman# turned in a solid performance catching the first touchdown pass of his career … Defensively, the Yeomen were led by
Tyler Lewis who registered nine stops on the day ... The Terriers win snapped a six-game losing streak against the Yeomen
Scouting the Terriers …
The Terriers come into Saturday's contest looking for their first win of the season … Last week, Hiram was shutout by nationally ranked Wabash College 41-0 … The Terriers are currently ranked last in the NCAC in both scoring offense and defense, scoring only 7.9 points per game, while giving up an average of 43 points per game … Hiram's offensive attack is headed by its freshman quarterback Brendan Rehor who, although struggling with just five TDs and 15 INTs, is completing over 55 percent of his passes … A pocket passer, Rehor likes to get the ball to the outside, to his receiving corps headed by junior Glenn Campbell (437 yards, 4 TDs) and freshman Kyle Callari (424 yards, 1 TD) … Freshman Chris Austin (42.7 yards per game) and sophomore Rodney Jacobs (4.1 yards per carry) lead Hiram's rushing attack … Defensively, the Terriers are led by sophomore linebacker Jon Hull, who currently leads the team with 69 total tackles, 21 more than the next best tackler … Senior defensive lineman Humphrey Caswell looks to be a force in the trenches using his size (6-0, 285) to reek havoc in the backfield, racking up eight tackles for a loss to go along with two sacks this season.
Last Hurrah …
Saturday marks the final home game for seniors
Dan Villar,
Scott Kjellberg, and
Max Roessler, as well as the last game of their outstanding careers in the crimson and gold … Kjellberg currently out with a knee injury has been a standout in the offensive backfield as the team's fullback clearing the way for all-time school rushing leader
R.V. Carroll and currently
Sean Curtis and
Adam Lowther … It is evident that his leadership and presence in the backfield has been almost non-existent this year as the Yeomen rushing attack has struggled to find consistency throughout the season … Roessler is currently a fifth-year senior returning to anchor the Yeomen offensive line, while Villar made the move this year from wideout to defensive back in an attempt to see more of the field on a defense that normally struggles with injury.
A Game of Youngsters …
Despite Saturday being Senior Day for the Yeomen, the field at Savage Stadium will be filled with young players on both sides of the ball … Many freshmen and sophomores have seen the bulk of the work for both the Terriers and Yeomen this season, starting with first with both teams headed by freshman quarterbacks … The Yeomen look to have the edge in that department as
David Kalgren has gotten better each week, both running and throwing the ball … Last week, he racked up a career best 162 yards through the air to go along with 73 yards on the ground … With his ability to extend the play, Kalgren should give the struggling Hiram defense fits all day.
Keep on Rolling …
Last week, sophomore running back
Adam Lowther racked up a career best 83 yards on just 11 carries to go along with a 40-yard TD run … Hiram is currently ranked last in the NCAC in rush defense giving up an average of 243 yards on the ground … With the escapability of Kalgren, and the bruising running of Lowther and Curtis, look for the Yeomen to control the tempo of the game by taking advantage of the weak Terrier rush defense.
Going Out on Top …
With the winless Terriers coming to town this weekend, the Oberlin College football team will look to end their season on a high note by giving the Oberlin fans a show at home … Since 2002, Oberlin is 5-2 in their final game of the season … Both teams look to be evenly matched, which should provide for a fantastic atmosphere at Savage Stadium … Look for both teams to come with extra passion Saturday, as the Terriers will want to take advantage of their last chance to notch a win this season, and the Yeomen will look to send its seniors out winners.
