Schubert Signs With Mahoning Valley Thunder of af2

Chris Schubert signed with the Mahoning Valley Thunder of af2.
November 25 – Former Oberlin College football star Chris Schubert has officially signed to play for the Mahoning Valley Thunder of the arenafootball2 league.

Schubert, a 2008 graduate, was one of the greatest players to ever wear the crimson and gold. The local Oberlin, Ohio, product is the school's all-time leader in career receiving yards (2,536) and touchdown receptions (23).

He was not only dangerous as a wide out, but as a return specialist as well. His 2,867 career kickoff return yards and 343 punt return yards are also school best.

During his senior season he was a First-Team All-NCAC selection as a receiver and return man. He also garnered the Michael P. Dougan Yeoman Award as the senior who shows the most courage and devotion to Oberlin Football and was named as team's Special Forces Player of the Year. Following his amazing campaign, Schubert was invited to attend the Cleveland Browns mini camp last spring.

“This is obviously very exciting for me to continue my career, playing at a professional level,” Schubert said. “With the Thunder being close to home, it also nice that I will be able to stay in an area that I am familiar with and have my family and friends come see me play.”

This past fall, Schubert worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the Yeomen working with safeties.

“Chris has the perfect skill set and ability to play the indoor game,” Oberlin head football coach Jeff Ramsey said. “His quickness, speed and agility translates very well to the arena style of play.”

In February, Schubert will participate in a two-day tryout for the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League.

The Mahoning Valley Thunder is based out of Youngstown, Ohio and is entering its third season in af2, which gets underway on March 1, 2009. For more information about the Thunder, visit their website at http://www.mahoningvalleythunder.com/
